3 Keys to Vacationing in the Florida Keys
For many people, the idea of vacationing in the unique and relaxing Florida Keys is a dream come true. The Keys are the closest and most accessible way for most people to enjoy a Caribbean island adventure, all without actually leaving the U.S. If you're thinking about visiting these stunning islands, here is a handy guide to what to do and where to go.
Look Outside Key West. The Florida Keys are an island chain southwest of the mainland of Florida, so they are comprised of many different small islands. Without a doubt, the most famous of all the islands is Key West. Unfortunately, this also makes it the most expensive and most difficult place to book lodging. Instead of blowing your whole budget within the limits of Key West, look farther afield for a good vacation rental. Several other islands are easily accessible to Key West, most notably the sleepy -- and much more affordable -- area in Key Largo. Here, you can afford to splurge on a vacation rental home or condo with an ocean view and access to the fantastic nearby snorkeling waters.
Play in the Water, Not on the Beach. The Keys have are bordered by reefs -- including the continental United States' only living coral reef -- that give them much of their history and mystique. But those same reefs also make the beaches of most of the keys less spectacular. So, get your fill of beach-going before you leave the mainland of Florida. Then, focus on getting in the ocean itself, where the islands really shine. You can find many easy places to snorkel, dive, swim, jet-ski, and kayak among reefs and mangrove trees. The best place to enjoy the ocean is probably John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park.
Don't Overbook. Get into the island lifestyle by planning your activities conservatively. The island chain is quite large -- you can drive 90 miles from the mainland to the far edge of Key West -- so don't plan to see everything in one vacation. Instead, find a great rental home and explore only two or three things per day, planning to return to use this base to explore more next time. Schedule some time to enjoy laid-back activities like the fabulous sunset at Mallory Square in Key West or manatee viewing on the ferry to Pigeon Key.
Following these few guidelines is an easy way to have a great time in the the enchanting Florida Keys without breaking the bank. That way, you can come back time and time again to let their island life melt your troubles away. For information about vacation rentals for your next trip, check out OKEMOHOUSERENTAL.COM.
